TIPS, TECHNIQUES & TUTORIALS
Each time I color I attempt to do something new or different in terms of either the medium I use or the colors I choose. The two examples below are about my color choices. I attempted to incorporate colors that I wouldn't normally have used either in relation to the subject or in combination with the other colors used for the picture. I learned that getting creative with color can create some wonderful results.
I was inspired to do this by Christine Kowbuz (read an interview with her here) who uses color to set off other colors so beautifully! I still have lots to learn but I hope to keep experimenting and to learn more about color so I can achieve better and more exciting results! ![]() Colorist: Jones Flores Coloring Book: Beautiful Nature So many people have asked for a video tutorial on water drops and now it's finally here! This is the fourth in a series of grayscale coloring tutorials featuring the coloring of the talented grayscale colorist, Jones Flores. In this tutorial, Jones teaches us how to color water drops using the leaf from the "Beautiful Nature" grayscale coloring book. Many of you may have seen the tips that Jones provided on how to color water drops. I've included the tips below in case you haven't seen them or if you'd like a refresher. Now we have expanded on those tips with a full video walking you through all the details from how to do the background around the drops to the drops themselves. All color names and materials are explained in the video as well as instructions on each layer of color and type of stroke or pressure to use. Even if you aren't a grayscale colorist you will still find this tutorial helpful because the techniques transfer very nicely to line art. The grayscale water drops are excellent practice for learning where the highlights and shadows should appear on a water drop. Click the video below to start watching. Jones' Tips on Coloring Water DropsOutline each water drop with a thin black line (or other dark color) and highlight the light area of the drop with white. Then, follow the grayscale for determining the lightness or darkness of color to use for the rest of the drop, choosing colors from the same color palette used for the rest of the leaf. You'll notice that the drops often have some shading near the edges of the drop, this extra shading helps with the 3D effect. Remember, the contrast of the darkest and the lightest colors are what bring out that nice 3D effect on the water drops. Happy Coloring!

This is the third in a series of grayscale coloring tutorials featuring the coloring of the talented grayscale colorist, Jones Flores. In this tutorial, Jones colors a picture of a dahlia flower from the "Beautiful Nature" grayscale coloring book. Using mainly Prismacolor Premier colored pencils, Jones uses layering and burnishing to get beautiful results. This is a great video for seeing how Jones does her layering. Also, you'll be able to watch the change that occurs as she burnishes and see the positive impact it has on the final picture. Burnishing is where you apply your pencils hard and push the colors into the paper. This is usually your final layer of colored pencil.
