Colorist: Jones Flores
Coloring Book: Beautiful Creatures
Recently we did our fourth live stream video tutorial & color-along with Jones Flores as our teacher. This time we colored the flamingos from Beautiful Creatures. I was on audio to moderate and ask Jones questions.

During this tutorial we covered five key areas:
  1. Choosing colors.
  2. How to color a sunset background.
  3. How to create realistic shadows, including when and where to put shadows.
  4. How to color feather details.
  5. Key colored pencil coloring tips, specifically:
    1. How to create vibrant colors.
    2. How to build multiple layers.
    3. How to increase color contrast.
    4. How to blend with burnishing.
    5. How to blend with petroleum jelly.
    6. When and how to mix Prismacolor (wax-based) and Polychromos (oil-based) pencils.
In case you missed it, below you will find the recorded version of the tutorial. You will also find the flamingos coloring page for you to download and print, as well as a list of the supplies you will need, so you can color along with Jones.

Step 1: Download & print the coloring page

Just click the "Download File" link below to download & print the flamingos coloring page from Beautiful Creatures.

Step 2: Gather your coloring supplies

You will need:
  • Colored pencils - use the chart below for a list of Faber Castell Polychromos colors. Any pencil brand is totally fine. You can use the Polychromos colors as a guide for finding similar colors within the brand of pencils you are using or just use the "3-Tone Rule" to select a light, medium and dark color for each of the color groups: Yellow, Orange, Pink & Brown. For the "highlights" you will need black, white and a medium pink/purple.
  • Optional blending mediums: Vaseline/Petroleum Jelly, Gamsol.
  • A small paint brush for blending.

I love your books. Are you going to have new ones done? I bought 2 of the beautiful creatures. The first one I messed up a lot, but through your tutorials and the other pictures on the website, I must say the second book is coming out a lot better. Thank you for what you do.

Thank you so much, Jennifer! I'm so pleased to hear that the tutorials are helpful. I'm just working on planning out more so keep an eye out for them :-). As for a new book, nothing definite planned yet but it's still a possibility!

I vote for another book too. A "variety" book would be really nice. Animals, plant life, home life, farm life, recreational life, etc......

Thanks so much, Nicole and Jones for these tutorials. I'd have been afraid to even start on my boks without the tutorials. Now, when I finish the flamingos, I think I'll try ONE on my own and see what happens.

I love the variety book idea! I'm so glad you are finding the tutorials worthwhile and that they are giving you the confidence to try a page on your own! :-)
