Tutorial & Color-Along: Learn 5 Key Coloring Techniques

4/11/2017

Lotus flower buds from the Beautiful Nature grayscale coloring book (www.huelish.com)
Colorist: Jones Flores
Coloring Book: Beautiful Nature
Recently we did our third live stream video tutorial & color-along with Jones Flores as our teacher. This time we colored the lotus flower buds from Beautiful Nature. I was on audio to moderate and ask Jones questions. During this tutorial we learned five key things:

  1. Petal Texture: creating realistic petals.
  2. Burnishing: blending colors without solvent/medium.
  3. Key to Outlining: how to create a focus on the subject & when and where to outline to avoid overdoing it.
  4. Grayscale Contrast: how to increase color depth and darkness.
  5. Blurry Background Technique: how to blur out the background smoothly and blending with petroleum jelly.

In case you missed it, below you will find the recorded version of the tutorial. You will also find the lotus flower buds page for you to download and print, as well as a list of the supplies you will need, so you can color along with Jones.

Step 2: Gather your coloring supplies

You will need:
  • Colored pencils - use the chart below for a list of Prismacolor Premier colors. Any pencil brand is totally fine. You can use the Prismacolor colors as a guide for finding similar colors within the brand of pencils you are using or just select a range of light, medium & dark pinks, purples, greens & blues. Also, make sure you have a black and a white colored pencil.
  • Vaseline/Petroleum Jelly
  • A small paint brush

I'm really hopine for the peacock on the next tutorial! I keep looking at it but haven't built up the courage to try and tackle it just yet. ;)

I'll be announcing the next tutorial soon. We are planning to color the flamingos from Beautiful Creatures but I will make a note of the peacock as a possible subject of a future tutorial. :-)
