Sometimes the absence or lack of color says a lot about what kind of message the artist is trying to convey. Pretty much like the effect of the absence of sound when Michael Corleone's daughter was shot in Godfather 3, it can deliver a very powerful message. It can give more emphasis to the overall emotion the artwork wants to project. A whitewashed photograph or sephia can be nostalgic and at the same time just trying to express either a longing for a moment to stop so we can enjoy it longer.
